Search engine optimization used to be a race to the top of the rankings. Today, it's starting to feel like a race to irrelevance. Whether you’re gunning for the top spot on Google or the top paragraph in ChatGPT’s output, the same uncomfortable reality sets in:
The user gets the answer—without ever seeing your site.
This is the era of zero-click search, now rebranded as "agent-based answers." But the economics haven’t caught up.
The New Showroom Problem
In retail, we’ve long had a name for this behavior: showrooming. Customers walk into a store, test the product, get their questions answered by a sales rep—and then buy it online somewhere cheaper.
Now, content creators are the ones getting showroomed.
Blogs, forums, whitepapers, product comparison tables—used to train or inform AI models or answer search queries—are rarely visited. The value extraction has already happened upstream. The value exchange never did.
For entrepreneurs, strategists, and architects, this introduces a troubling question:
If software agents read your content, apply your insights, and never credit or compensate you—what’s your model for survival?

Content Becomes Infrastructure, and Infrastructure Gets Squeezed
When your work becomes infrastructure, it gets commoditized—unless you control the interface. If all value flows to the agents, and the agents are owned by platforms, you're not part of the transaction anymore.
We are rapidly approaching the paradox of digital capitalism:

• Creators become invisible.
This isn't a conspiracy. It's an architectural inevitability.
So What’s the Move?
1. Own the Relationship, Not Just the Content. If your value is being consumed upstream, move downstream. Build gated communities, private APIs, or tools where the exchange is direct.
2. Start Thinking Like a Merchant with an AI Front Door. What happens when your best visitor is an LLM with no wallet and no loyalty? How do you convert an agent's answer into a lead? You probably can’t. But you can watermark your content, track behaviour, and push for attribution standards.
3. Push Back on the Algorithmic Monopoly. If creators don’t demand visibility, provenance, and payout, AI will become the new web, and this time, there’s no hyperlink home.
